Is Snapchat Safe for Kids?

Older kids only Rated 12+ (App Store); minimum age 13

Snapchat's disappearing messages, Snap Map location sharing, and 'Quick Add' stranger suggestions make it one of the riskier apps for kids. It's for ages 13+, but we suggest 16+. If used, enable Family Center, turn on Ghost Mode, and lock down who can contact your teen.

Our recommended age: 16+

Top risks parents should know

  • Disappearing messages reduce accountability and evidence of abuse.
  • Snap Map can broadcast your child's real-time location.
  • 'Quick Add' suggests and connects strangers.

How to make Snapchat safer

  • Enable Family Center to see who they talk to (not the content).
  • Turn on Ghost Mode so location isn't shared.
  • Set 'Contact Me' and 'Quick Add' to friends-only.
  • Talk openly about screenshots — nothing truly disappears.
