Is VRChat Safe for Kids?

Older kids only Rated 17+ (App Store); minimum age 13

VRChat is a 13+ social-VR world where kids share immersive voice rooms with anonymous strangers, and moderation is limited. Mature and explicit rooms exist, and the immersive nature raises grooming and exposure risks. We don't recommend it for younger children; older teens should stay in age-gated, moderated worlds only.

Our recommended age: Not recommended under 16

Top risks parents should know

  • Live voice + immersive contact with anonymous adult strangers.
  • Mature, explicit, and disturbing user-made worlds exist.
  • Immersion can make inappropriate contact feel intensely real.

How to make VRChat safer

  • Treat VRChat as 16+ and supervise closely if used.
  • Use age-gated worlds and the safety 'shield' settings.
  • Mute and block strangers by default; avoid public rooms.
  • Keep VR sessions in shared family spaces.
