Is WhatsApp Safe for Kids?

Caution advised Rated 12+ (App Store); minimum age 13

WhatsApp is a 13+ messaging app that's relatively safe one-to-one, but group invites, unknown-number messages, and forwarded scams are the main risks for kids. Lock privacy settings so only contacts see their info, and teach them to ignore messages from unknown numbers.

Our recommended age: 13+ with settings locked down

Top risks parents should know

  • Strangers can message a child if they get the phone number.
  • Group links can pull kids into chats full of unknown people.
  • Forwarded misinformation and phishing scams spread quickly.

How to make WhatsApp safer

  • Set 'Last Seen', profile photo, and 'About' to My Contacts only.
  • Control who can add them to groups (My Contacts).
  • Teach them to never tap links from unknown senders.
  • Review contacts and group memberships together.
